The Chicago White Sox manager, Will Venable, relished the All-Star break but eagerly anticipated the team’s return to action. Before Friday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Centre, he expressed his excitement, saying, “But I was thinking about today, and just the excitement to be back playing games today, because these guys work so hard and play so hard and give you something entertaining every day in the game.”
As the Sox began the second half of the season on Friday, they found themselves in a tie for the first place in the American League Central with the Cleveland Guardians. This is a position they have been in 13 times in their history, most recently in 2021 when they held an eight-game division lead. The current team generated interest during the first 95 games with standout performances, featuring the home run achievements of Munetaka Murakami, Miguel Vargas, and Colson Montgomery. Consistency from outfielders Sam Antonacci and Tristan Peters also played a crucial role. Players are enthusiastic about continuing their efforts. “We’re all excited for the second half,” stated All-Star third baseman Vargas, “We’ve got goals set and we want to reach them.”
Post-Break Questions Facing the Sox
1. Maintaining Momentum
Before the All-Star break, the Sox focused on staying present. After being swept by the Boston Red Sox, the team rebounded by sweeping the Athletics. Starting the second half, Venable aims to emphasize the importance of sticking to the standards they established. “Just reminders about the things they’ve committed to and have created a standard around. I think that’s really important,” he remarked. Will Venable is aware of potential distractions, such as the All-Star break and trade rumors. He stressed the importance of focusing on winning daily. “Those distractions will always be there, but we’ll just find ways to keep the guys focused on the task at hand,” he added.
2. Trade Deadline Activity
As the Aug. 3 trade deadline looms, the Sox may become buyers. “We feel really good about where we’re at, and candidly it’s one series at a time,” acknowledged general manager Chris Getz. “We’ll prepare for all different scenarios and we’re going to look for opportunities to help this future now and for the future, whether that be now or further along.” While pitching is typically sought by contenders, the Sox also have internal options. Tanner McDougal, for example, is being prepared for major league opportunities. Director of player development Paul Janish noted, “For the purpose of impact on the major-league team, Tanner is going to be in a situation where he’ll pitch out of the pen with the abilities to go multiples and pitch two out of three days.”
3. Path to the Postseason
The 2021 team managed to secure the division title and reached the postseason. This year’s team aims to follow suit. Venable emphasized the need to “clean up” on-field issues and consistently evaluate their processes. He highlighted the importance of maintaining focus on the aspects that brought them success. “For us, it’s about just doing those things that we can control and making sure that’s top of mind,” Venable said. He commended the players for their ability to “flush yesterday’s results and having a great attitude and coming to the ballpark ready to play.”
