Chicago Experiences Unusual Rainfall in September

After a weekend marked by record-breaking September rainfall, Chicago residents can expect a period of light rain and cloudy skies, according to weather officials.

Gino Izzi, senior meteorologist at the National Weather Service, noted that Monday’s weather would likely be “more drizzly, if anything.” The rainfall over Saturday and Sunday had set a new record for O’Hare International Airport, which hadn’t seen such levels in two days during September since 2019. Recorded rainfall reached 0.86 inches on Saturday and 1.21 inches on Sunday.

Izzi explained that Tuesday would begin with cloudy conditions and gradually clear throughout the day. The weekend’s downpours resulted in the cancellation of an open-water swim in the Chicago River and brought the southwest suburban McCook Reservoir to a significant 95% capacity. Riot Fest faced an early closure Saturday night and reopened Sunday afternoon, with attendees maneuvering through muddy Douglass Park, donning ponchos amidst the soggy conditions.

On Monday morning, Chicago’s Midway airport reported conditions as overcast and 59 degrees, while O’Hare airport recorded 62 degrees with similar cloud coverage.
