ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Chicago White Sox secured a decisive 9-1 victory against the Tampa Bay Rays, showcasing their ability to capitalize on their opponent’s mistakes at Tropicana Field. Sam Antonacci, playing left field, set the tone with a grounder to second base that resulted in an error, allowing him to reach base and opening a series of first-inning errors for the Rays.
The White Sox, leaders of the American League Central with a 59-52 record, seized opportunities against the AL East-leading Rays, winning two out of three games in the series. Infielder Miguel Vargas expressed his satisfaction, stating, “It’s always great to win these types of games.”
Antonacci’s initial error turned into a scoring frenzy as Andrew Benintendi and Colson Montgomery contributed to a first-inning lead. Benintendi reached base on another error by Rays pitcher Griffin Jax, allowing Antonacci to score. Montgomery’s aggressive gameplay led to a second run when Rays shortstop Ben Williamson hesitated, unsure whether to throw home or pursue the runners. Montgomery capitalized, giving Chicago a 2-0 lead.
“It was huge,” commented Sox manager Will Venable. “Two runs early is always a positive start, especially against a defensively strong team like the Rays. Our players capitalized on their errors and maintained a competitive approach throughout the game.”
The offensive showcase continued as Benintendi hit a solo home run in the fourth inning. Everson Pereira brought home two runs with a sixth-inning double off Craig Kimbrel, extending the lead to 5-0. Pereira further increased the gap with a two-run homer in the ninth against Alex Cook.
Despite injuries throughout the season, Pereira positively impacted the game. He shared that his focus remains on future opportunities despite previous challenges. “It hasn’t been an easy year. A lot of ups and downs. But you know what, there’s nothing I can do about it. Now I just focus on what I can do and all the things that we have ahead of us.”
Anthony Kay was instrumental in securing the win, delivering 6 1/3 innings, striking out three, and allowing one walk. He adeptly navigated bases-loaded scenarios in the fourth and sixth innings. Venable praised Kay, saying, “Really great to see him work around some trouble there and do a nice job.”
The White Sox demonstrated consistent performance against top teams in the AL East, splitting games against the Yankees before dominating the Rays series. They successfully limited the Rays to only three runs over the series.
Looking ahead, the Sox will face Boston in a three-game series starting Tuesday. Optimism surrounds the team’s recent acquisition of pitcher Luis Castillo from the Seattle Mariners. Vargas acknowledged the front office’s role in strengthening the team’s push toward the World Series.
