The Chicago White Sox claimed a narrow 2-1 victory over the Cleveland Guardians at Rate Field, witnessed by a crowd of 28,883. Randal Grichuk, Chicago’s designated hitter, played a key role by doubling and scoring on a single by shortstop Colson Montgomery in the second inning. Miguel Vargas, the third baseman, added to the score with a home run in the sixth inning. These three hits proved sufficient to secure the win.
The White Sox pitching staff delivered an outstanding performance. Sean Burke, their starting pitcher, allowed only one run on six hits while recording six strikeouts and a walk across 6 1/3 innings. Sean Newcomb finished the game by pitching 2 2/3 hitless innings, with two strikeouts and one walk. Manager Will Venable praised Burke and Newcomb’s efforts in shutting down Cleveland’s offense.
“Burke put us in a good spot to cover many quality innings,” Venable stated. “Newcomb behind him was special.”
Cleveland’s sole run occurred when Kahlil Watson hit a home run in the fifth inning. Following his strong outing, Burke explained that the key was maintaining control of the strike zone and managing the pitch count, as he threw 90 pitches over the course of the game.
“Just trying to do everything I can to keep the pitch count down,” Burke said. “The fifth inning maybe got a little long on me, but other than that I felt it was pretty good.”
Newcomb efficiently retired the final batters, securing his second save of the season. Reflecting on his role, Newcomb shared, “Not being one of the five starters, that’s the best way to do it. Felt good.”
For the Guardians, starter Parker Messick pitched 7 2/3 innings, giving up two runs on three hits with ten strikeouts. The Sox managed their first hit in the fourth inning when Grichuk doubled, setting up Montgomery’s crucial single.
Watson’s homer tied the score at 1-1 before Vargas restored the lead with his 17th home run in the sixth inning. Talking about his approach, Vargas said, “I’m just trying to compete at this point, trying to get on base. Let the guys behind me do the job.”
Venable commented on making the most of their three hits, emphasizing the impact of Vargas and Montgomery’s performances.
“It was just enough tonight,” Venable noted. “For our pitching staff to put us in a position to make those runs count, means a lot.”
Securing their ninth consecutive home series win, the Sox moved into first place in the American League Central standings with a 41-37 record, overtaking the Guardians, now at 41-39. Vargas emphasized the significance of the victory after a challenging road trip.
“We know how important this series is for us,” Vargas said. “We can feel the energy out there is very high every day.”
The team remains focused, aware of the long season ahead. “We know where we are at,” Burke remarked. “We’ve got to keep going like this.”
