Washington Commanders Part Ways with Coach Steele

The Washington Commanders have terminated tight ends coach Ben Steele following his arrest on charges related to driving while intoxicated (DWI) last month. This action comes before Steele had the chance to start his first season with the team. The Commanders announced their decision with no additional comments.

Steele was taken into custody on DWI charges last month and was placed on administrative leave afterward. He now also faces charges for refusing blood or breath tests, obstructing an officer without force, and changing lanes without signaling, according to Virginia court records.

The Commanders have named Wes Welker, a former receiver for the New England Patriots and Denver Broncos, as the interim tight ends coach. The announcement of Steele’s permanent replacement is anticipated soon, as the Commanders are set to begin their training camp.

Ben Steele brings to a close his role as tight ends coach after previously holding similar positions with the Arizona Cardinals for three years. Throughout his career, Steele has held coaching roles at several teams, including the Green Bay Packers and Houston Texans. His coaching journey began at the collegiate level and progressed to the NFL, where he joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2014 as an offensive quality control coach, eventually becoming their tight ends coach in 2017.

Steele’s tenure with the Cardinals was particularly impactful for Trey McBride, a tight end who thrived under Steele’s guidance, achieving two Pro Bowl selections in recent years.

Washington Commanders’ Recent Developments

In preparation for the upcoming season, the Washington Commanders have brought in Chig Okonkwo to strengthen their tight end group. Last season, John Bates and Ben Sinnott were tasked with leading the position. The Commanders are keen to improve upon their 5-12 record from last year, a season impacted by the injury of quarterback Jayden Daniels. In 2024, Daniels had propelled the team to a 12-5 record and earned the Offensive Rookie of the Year award.
