A 4-year-old boy experienced a comical surprise when he saw his dad without a beard for the first time. Ashleigh Young from San Diego recorded her son, Laceson, witnessing his dad Quiyon’s new look.
Research highlights how children perceive bearded versus clean-shaven men. A University of Queensland study involving nearly 500 children found that kids as young as two view bearded men as older and stronger yet prefer clean-shaven faces. Notably, children with bearded fathers are more positive about facial hair, indicating that familiarity impacts their perception.
This background helps explain Laceson’s reaction to his father’s clean-shaven appearance. Quiyon’s decision to shave was not by choice but due to military requirements. “He is in the Navy, where there are rules on facial hair and shaving waivers,” Young explained.
Anticipating Laceson’s response, Young prepared to capture the moment. “I knew my son would react humorously because he had never seen his dad without a beard,” she said. The funny responses from Laceson surpassed expectations.
The reaction was shared on TikTok, gaining over a million views. The video shows Laceson confronting his newly clean-shaven dad, appearing surprised, and asking, “What’s wrong with your face?” His question drew laughs from both parents. He continued, asking, “What’s wrong with it?” and “What’s wrong with your beard?” Laceson learned that his dad had shaved it off, prompting his inquiries of “Why is it gone?” and “Why did you shave it off?”
Young noted that Laceson is slowly adjusting to the change, frequently commenting on his dad’s missing beard. “He makes funny comments like, ‘Look, he has no beard,'” she shared.
For now, Quiyon does not plan to regrow the beard, meaning Laceson will need to get used to his dad’s new look. Young confirmed there are no intentions to change this decision soon.
