A Chinese submarine launched a nuclear-capable ballistic missile into the Pacific Ocean on Monday, as part of planned military exercises, according to the official Xinhua news agency.
The missile, equipped with a dummy warhead, was fired by a Chinese navy submarine at 12:01 p.m. Beijing time. It landed accurately in the designated sea area.
The announcement followed notifications given to Australian and New Zealand officials about the impending Chinese missile test in the South Pacific.
This marks the second instance of such tests, following the firing of an intercontinental ballistic missile into these waters by China’s Rocket Force in September 2024.
Officials stated that these tests are part of China’s annual military training program. Countries in the region were informed beforehand.
“It complies with international law and practice and is not directed at any specific country or target,” Xinhua reported.
