Mike Vrabel, former head coach of the Tennessee Titans, led the team to three playoff appearances. However, they never reached the Super Bowl under his leadership.
The Titans advanced to the AFC Championship Game in 2019. They were defeated 35-24 by the Kansas City Chiefs.
Vrabel transitioned to the New England Patriots and found immediate success. In his first season, he pushed the team to the Super Bowl, though they lost 29-13 in February.
In a recent episode of Terron Armstead’s “The Set,” Titans defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons expressed his jealousy over Vrabel’s accomplishments with New England. “Was I surprised?” Simmons admitted in an NFL Media transcription. “I think we all would be surprised if this guy, first year in New England, they go straight to the Super Bowl. First off, I’m jealous as hell. Like what? I was just with you four years, and you couldn’t get me to the Super Bowl?”
Unlike the Titans, the Patriots boasted a potent defense and an MVP-caliber quarterback, Drake Maye, which bolstered their offensive capabilities.
The Titans parted ways with Vrabel, and the team has struggled, going 3-14 in the past two seasons. Tennessee now looks to new head coach Robert Saleh for revitalization.
Off-field issues raised doubts about Vrabel’s leadership and ability to maintain strong relationships within the locker room. Simmons maintained Vrabel’s strength in fostering connections. “One of the things when you build that relationship off the football field and I think that’s the biggest thing with Vrabel,” said Simmons. “And I can feel this, it’s the same with Saleh.”
Simmons believes that nurturing relationships beyond the field inspires players to perform at their best. This is what Vrabel aims to achieve as training camp begins following a challenging spring.
