Grammy-winning artist Chris Brown admitted guilt to affray related to an altercation in a London nightclub, resulting in a music producer’s injury. The guilty plea occurred during his hearing at London’s Southwark Crown Court. Brown, who is 37, had initially rejected more severe charges related to the incident in 2023.
In exchange for his plea, charges of assault, trying to cause grievous bodily harm, and having an offensive weapon, identified as a bottle, were dismissed. Omololu Akinlolu, Brown’s friend and vocal coach, also acknowledged guilt to affray. They both were originally set for trial in October.
Brown initially disputed the allegations of attacking Abraham Diaw with a bottle at Tape nightclub in Mayfair in February 2023. However, prosecutors claimed the altercation was recorded by security cameras in the crowded club. Prosecutor Claire Campbell highlighted the “vicious and unprovoked attack” executed by Brown and Akinlolu, stating that Brown used a glass bottle as a weapon.
“This kind of violence is entirely unacceptable, and the Crown Prosecution Service will work tirelessly with the police and partners across the criminal justice system to pursue cases like this and prove that no one is above the law,” Campbell stated.
Brown had previously been released on bail amounting to 5 million pounds ($6.75 million), allowing him to tour across Europe and North America during the previous summer. On Friday, he was once more released on bail and faces sentencing on October 26 for the affray charge, which may result in a maximum sentence of three years in prison.
After the court appearance, Brown, dressed in a tan suit, gold-rimmed sunglasses, and a St. Louis Cardinals cap, signed autographs for fans. Brown gained fame as a teenager in 2005 and received his first Grammy for the best R&B album in 2011 for “F.A.M.E.” He later won another Grammy in the same category for his album “11:11 (Deluxe)” in 2025.
