NBC’s sport analyst Chris Simms faced significant social media criticism on Saturday night following remarks made during the halftime of the Oregon-USC game. Simms criticized Dante Moore, Oregon Ducks’ quarterback, blaming him for a hit that led to Moore’s hospitalization.
“It was a Debbie Downer moment,” Simms stated. He explained the defender’s dilemma with Moore running at him, emphasizing that Moore’s late slide put the defender in “a kind of no-win situation.”
Fans quickly responded, flooding social media with negative reactions towards Simms’ comments. Less than 24 hours later, Simms issued an apology via social media.
“I’d like to apologize for how I handled halftime last night between the Oregon Ducks and USC Trojans,” he expressed. “I failed to show enough sympathy for Moore’s injury, and I am sorry for that.” Simms reiterated his respect for college football, particularly praising Oregon Ducks and Dante Moore.
Simms acknowledged his respect for Oregon Ducks’ coach Dan Lanning as well, admitting his mistake and expressing his understanding of the sport’s brutality, referencing his own experience of injury. Despite some skepticism from fans, accusing Simms of apologizing due to backlash, he acknowledged his comments were inappropriate.
