Chrissy Metz recently spoke about her choice to start using a GLP-1 medication after years of skepticism. On the ‘Today’ show, the 45-year-old ‘This Is Us’ actress explained that entering perimenopause and reflecting on her family’s obesity history influenced her decision.
Skeptical for Years
Metz confessed to being cautious about GLP-1 drugs until a friend provided detailed insights on their benefits. Her father’s health issues prompted her to proactively address her own health concerns. ‘Maybe I should try and get ahead of ‘it,” she stated.
Since starting the medication, Metz reported improvements in her energy levels and overall health. She emphasized that longevity is her primary focus.
A Comprehensive Approach
Although initially hesitant, Metz concluded, with encouragement from her doctor and team, that the medication could be advantageous. She acknowledged the potential risks, but pointed out that understanding how the drug impacts each person individually was crucial for her decision.
‘That’s what’s sort of beautiful, it’s a whole lifestyle change,’ she remarked. Metz has also integrated strength training and exercise into her routine. She insists that using the medication isn’t ‘a magic wand,’ and requires diligence and commitment.
Metz expressed satisfaction with the journey thus far.
A Public Dialogue on Weight and Health
Metz’s experience is part of a longstanding conversation regarding her weight and health. She gained fame through her role as Kate Pearson in ‘This Is Us,’ where themes of weight and body image were significant.
In a past interview, Metz addressed societal fears of obesity, arguing that increased education and open discussions could help alter perceptions.
Her challenges with food and weight are not solely Hollywood problems. Metz attributed her complex relationship with these issues to past experiences, including mental and physical abuse from her stepfather.
‘He would weigh me in the kitchen or threaten to lock the cupboards,’ Metz revealed on ‘The Jamie Kern Lima Show.’
She believes awareness about food-related issues is growing and is working to heal past wounds, acknowledging that ‘it’s not easy.’
