Christine Brennan Discusses Alyssa Thomas and Caitlin Clark Incident

Christine Brennan, a columnist for USA Today and author of the book ON HER GAME: Caitlin Clark and the Revolution in Women’s Sports, shared her thoughts on a recent altercation between Phoenix Suns forward Alyssa Thomas and Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark. This incident led to Thomas receiving a one-game suspension and sparked discussions about how Clark is treated by her WNBA peers.

During a match at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis on June 24, 2026, Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas was involved in an altercation with Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark. The Phoenix Mercury secured a narrow victory over the Indiana Fever with a score of 111-109.

Brennan appeared on OutKick’s Don’t @ Me with Dan Dakich show, where she discussed how the image of Thomas’ fist to Clark’s throat has significant implications. She emphasized Clark’s influence in the league, noting that her popularity has paved the way for other players, including Thomas.

Brennan stated, Is the league going to speak out at all about the visual that will live with this league, I believe forever? I think that picture, the fist to the throat, is significant. I wish it wasn’t racial and we could focus on the fact that the face of the league, Caitlin Clark, who has brought many benefits to players, has experienced this.

Caitlin Clark has been instrumental in improving league conditions by increasing television ratings, attendance, and enhancing player experiences, such as charter flights. Brennan expressed concern about whether league commissioner Cathy Engelbert will address the incident’s impact on Clark and her potential for injury.

Alyssa Thomas has claimed to receive threats following the incident. The two teams are scheduled to meet again on July 9.
