Authorities in Ohio have arrested four individuals after finding 16 children in severely poor conditions in a home in rural Hamden, located 60 miles southeast of Columbus. The state’s Attorney General, Andy Wilson, highlighted the gravity of the situation at a news conference, stating his disbelief at the condition in which the children were living.
The discovery occurred during a search of the home. The children, found to be in urgent need of medical attention, were removed from the site. Wilson described the scene as the worst he’d witnessed in his career, calling it ‘pure evil.’ Two of the children were in such dire condition that they required air transport to Level 1 trauma centers for treatment.
‘If we had delayed even 24 hours, there’s a strong likelihood we would have been dealing with fatal outcomes,’ Wilson commented.
Vinton County Sheriff Ryan Cain emphasized the appalling living conditions, noting a significant amount of feces and bacterial contamination within the home. Most of the livestock was kept in better condition than the children,
Cain observed.
The suspects, identified as Gary Siders Sr., Gary Siders Jr., Christina Siders, and Elizabeth Siders, face 16 charges of second-degree child endangerment. During a court hearing on Wednesday, not guilty pleas were entered on their behalf, and the judge set a bond of $300,000 for each.
While officials have not confirmed if the children are related, they reported that the children range in age from 18 months to 18 years and include both boys and girls.
Vinton County Prosecutor William Archer clarified that the suspects are not originally from the area, and assured the public that this was an intra-family issue, not involving human trafficking or posing a risk to other children.
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine expressed his concern over the situation and praised the rapid response of the authorities. ‘It is heart-wrenching to hear about the conditions these children endured,’ he said, emphasizing his trust in the lead prosecutor handling the case, Andy Wilson.
Governor DeWine, along with his wife Fran, offered their prayers for the children and gratitude to the dedicated children’s services workers, law enforcement, and medical staff involved in providing care for the children.
