Christopher Nolan’s latest release, “The Odyssey,” has made a remarkable impact at the box office, achieving estimated ticket sales of $124.5 million domestically and $139.6 million internationally. This opening surpasses Nolan’s previous box-office hit “Oppenheimer” and represents his most successful debut since “The Dark Knight Rises” in 2012. In a Hollywood landscape dominated by intellectual property, Nolan converted Homer’s ancient epic into an unexpected summer blockbuster.
With a substantial production budget of $250 million, “The Odyssey” stands as one of the most costly R-rated films. Universal invested approximately $125 million in marketing the film. Nolan’s name alone draws audiences, evident by IMAX’s offering of tickets a year ahead for 70 mm showings. To meet the demand for IMAX 70 mm screenings, some theaters added midnight and early morning sessions, all selling out quickly.
IMAX has committed screens entirely to “The Odyssey” for three weeks, with 41 screens equipped to project in 70 mm format. This accounted for $6.3 million in ticket sales domestically. Overall, IMAX contributed $29.6 million domestically and $51.8 million globally, marking the company’s best weekend to date.
Since the pandemic, Nolan has helped rejuvenate cinemas. “Tenet,” one of the first major films post-pandemic, paved the way for a revived moviegoing experience. “Oppenheimer,” alongside Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” offered significant cinematic moments in 2023. “Oppenheimer” grossed $975 million worldwide, setting high standards for subsequent releases.
The arrival of “The Odyssey” during Hollywood’s most successful summer since 2019 is noteworthy. Box office sales have increased by about 10% compared to the previous year, according to Rentrak data. The industry anticipates achieving $10 billion in domestic earnings for the first time since the pandemic began. “The Odyssey” faced no real competition during opening weekend, further solidifying its strong performance.
Future presales signal ongoing interest, with many patrons waiting for IMAX screenings. The next potential competitor, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” starring Tom Holland and Zendaya, will open on July 31.
In “The Odyssey,” Matt Damon takes on the role of Odysseus, while Holland stars as Telemachus. The cast includes Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Zendaya as Athena, Robert Pattinson as Antinous, and Charlize Theron as Calypso. Lupita Nyong’o appears as Helen, and Elliot Page plays a soldier, sparking some controversy among certain conservative voices.
Despite such criticisms, Nolan’s “The Odyssey” has captured widespread attention and acclaim. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 95% fresh score, and audiences have rated it “A” on CinemaScore, underscoring its cultural significance this year.
