Rep. Chuck Edwards of North Carolina has announced that he and his wife, Teresa, have divested from their McDonald’s restaurant business. This decision allows Edwards to focus more on his duties in Congress, representing western North Carolina.
On Wednesday morning, Edwards announced that he will not seek re-election. He stated, “After much prayer and reflection, I’ve decided to withdraw from my re-election campaign. I will complete my current term. Serving Western North Carolina has been the honor of my life. Thank you for your trust, prayers, and support. God bless WNC and America.” This message appeared on X at 3:32 a.m. ET.
The announcement swiftly followed a report from the House Ethics Committee recommending censure for Edwards. The report detailed allegations of inappropriate conduct toward young female staffers, claiming Edwards engaged in behavior that could be perceived as romantic overtures. He provided these staffers with gifts and made comments on their appearance. Although Edwards denied any sexual intentions, the committee found his actions raised concerns.
Edwards’ political career began in the U.S. House of Representatives in early 2023. He secured a win in the GOP primary for North Carolina’s 11th Congressional District. However, recent ethics issues have overshadowed his tenure.
The House Ethics Committee’s report indicated no evidence of sexual activity or explicit propositions, but it highlighted the discomfort his conduct caused for the staffers involved. The committee concluded that Edwards should be censured for his actions.
Edwards expressed awareness of the rumors and discomfort caused by his behavior. In response to the Ethics Committee’s findings, the recommendation for his censure stands as a formal rebuke.
