Clark Criticizes Officiating in Indiana Fever’s Defeat

The Indiana Fever faced a setback in their home game against the Golden State Valkyries, losing 88-75. Caitlin Clark managed just 13 points in her 26 minutes on the court. During the matchup, she sustained a leg contusion, which she attributed to a missed referee call.

Clark expressed her frustration with the officiating in a postgame press conference. She explained that Kiah Stokes made contact with her, resulting in a knee to her quad. “That hurts,” Clark emphasized. “The ref can’t miss that, and I had to continue with a leg contusion.” She described the oversight as “ridiculous” and asserted that such calls should not be ignored.

I got kneed right in the quad, like that hurts. The ref can’t miss that, and then I had to play with a contusion in my leg for the rest of the game. It’s ridiculous. Can’t miss calls like that.

According to Clark, the referee indicated she “initiated the contact” with Stokes, explaining why no foul was assessed.

Despite voicing her concerns, Clark acknowledged Golden State’s defensive prowess. “They’re probably the best defensive team in the league. They’re really good at that,” she remarked. Clark noted her improved pace and burst in the latter stages of the game.

Clark’s performance is currently limited by a minutes restriction, aiming to manage a lingering back injury. This situation heightens the concern over aggressive plays against her. Not long ago, an incident with Phoenix Mercury’s Alyssa Thomas brought significant attention. Thomas’s fist made contact with Clark’s throat, leading to an after-the-fact upgrade to a Flagrant Foul 2 and a one-game suspension for Thomas, yet it fueled criticism of WNBA officiating and claims of unfair treatment for Clark.

Following Wednesday night’s defeat, the Indiana Fever stand at 14-10. They are set to face the Seattle Storm at 7:30 p.m. ET on Friday and hope to return to their winning ways.
