The term ‘blockbuster’ often gets overused in NFL discussions, but the recent agreement between the Cleveland Browns and Los Angeles Rams truly fits the bill. The Browns have traded Myles Garrett, a standout pass rusher, to the Rams. In exchange, the Browns will receive Pro Bowl pass rusher Jared Verse, a 2027 first-round draft pick, a 2028 second-round selection, and additional assets.
Myles Garrett, known for breaking the NFL record with 23 sacks in 2025, adds immense value to the Rams’ defense. As a two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year, Garrett brings a formidable presence to the Los Angeles lineup.
Cleveland’s general manager, Andrew Berry, while speaking at a recent event, mentioned ongoing discussions about the trade. Though the agreement happened quickly, he emphasized that negotiations were still in progress at the time of his comments.
The trade progresses unless either Garrett or Verse refuses to join their new teams or fails the physical exams, an occurrence seen earlier in the year with Maxx Crosby’s failed trade to the Baltimore Ravens.
For the Rams, this trade signifies a determined move to aim for the Super Bowl in 2026. They have made strategic additions recently, including acquiring Pro Bowl cornerback Trent McDuffie from the Kansas City Chiefs and signing another cornerback, Jaylen Watson, in free agency. These moves come alongside drafting quarterback Ty Simpson, planned as a potential successor to Matthew Stafford.
Stafford, at age 38 and last season’s MVP, committed to playing another season. The Rams view Simpson as a future starting quarterback, prompting them to part with their 2027 first-round draft pick in the Garrett trade.
Jared Verse has proven his mettle in the league, entering his third NFL season at 25 years old. His impressive rookie year stats included 66 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, and a league-leading 77 pressures. These accomplishments earned him the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award. In 2025, Verse continued to excel with 58 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, and 7.5 sacks, securing another Pro Bowl selection.
This trade provides the Browns with two first-round picks for 2027, a draft they find crucial due to its anticipated talent depth. While Cleveland eyes building for future success, the Rams are focused on immediate triumph.
