Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton have a long-standing and tense relationship marked by their competitive clashes. The return of Orton, known as the “Legend Killer,” to “Friday Night SmackDown” heightened this tension as he rekindled his rivalry with Rhodes, the “American Nightmare.” Their confrontations became so intense that SmackDown GM Nick Aldis had to forbid any physical altercations between them before their scheduled match at Sunday Night’s Main Event in Atlanta. Any misstep would result in the loss of their chance at a WWE championship.
The latest confrontation took place in Ottawa, Ontario, where Orton attempted to provoke Rhodes by questioning his obsession with becoming a champion. Orton’s taunts, accusing Rhodes of being “addicted” and “sick” due to his aspirations, highlighted the intense psychological warfare at play. Rhodes addressed these comments during an interview with OutKick Dropkick, underscoring the pressures and motivations that drive professional wrestlers.
He had said, ‘addicted to winning the championship’ and ‘sick’ and putting it in front of everything. What’s the term kids use today? The rage bait, you know, or baiting me into … because if I had hit him, then I don’t get an opportunity for the WWE championship ever, and the same vice versa if he had hit me.
Rhodes reflected on past victories against Orton, stressing that every wrestler aims to win and achieve championship status. He suggested that Orton’s own quest to match records, including reaching 17 championships like John Cena, adds a layer of desperation to their rivalry. Rhodes pointed out that no wrestler genuinely avoids the aspiration of becoming a champion, highlighting the competitive nature of the sport.
Rhodes is looking to re-enter the Undisputed WWE Championship scene, with his upcoming match against Orton serving as a crucial moment as “Money in the Bank” approaches. The winner could gain significant momentum moving forward.
The event at Sunday Night’s Main Event will feature additional exciting matchups, including a six-woman tag team match with Charlotte Flair, Alexa Bliss, and Tatum Paxley against Jade Cargill, Michin, and B-Fab. Baron Corbin will face Lil Yachty, and Oba Femi will compete against Bron Breakker.
