Michael Cohen discussed his relationship with Donald Trump during recent media appearances. Cohen addressed questions about whether he petitioned Trump for a pardon while speaking on CNN and also welcomed Trump on his New York radio program, 77 WABC.
Resubmitting Pardon Application
On CNN, Cohen clarified that he did not ask Trump for a pardon. He explained that a previous pardon application, submitted to former President Joe Biden, was denied. Cohen then reused the same documentation for Trump, changing only the names in the cover letter. As of now, he awaits acknowledgment of receipt.
Legal analyst Elie Honig commented that it is unusual for Cohen to resubmit the same application with liberal support to Trump. Honig said, “There seems never to be a complete end to Trump’s relationships with others, but this development is unexpected.”
Trump and Cohen’s History
Cohen’s relationship with Trump began in 2006, with Cohen acting as both adviser and personal lawyer. Their association deteriorated as Cohen faced legal issues in 2018. He pled guilty to charges related to tax, bank fraud, and campaign-finance violations, later becoming a significant witness in legal cases against Trump.
In January, Cohen stated that prosecutors pressured him to provide case-supportive testimony against Trump. Trump, in return, questioned Cohen’s credibility. However, during the recent radio segment, Trump expressed respect for Cohen’s recantation.
Evolution of Their Relationship
During the preview of the radio show, Cohen referred to their conversation as the first public interaction after years of estrangement. He described their renewed relationship as “cordial and growing.” Cohen believes there is mutual forgiveness, even though Trump has not detailed this reconciliation publicly.
Cohen’s full interview with Trump is scheduled to air on his Sunday radio show, ‘When You Know You Know,’ at 5 p.m. ET. This could provide more insight into their evolving dynamic.
