College Football Playoffs: A Look at Top Contenders

Less than a month from now, the College Football Playoff selection committee will release its first set of rankings. This often sparks anger but also provides insights into how the committee views the top teams. Instead of predicting the full 12-team CFP bracket, it’s useful to categorize top at-large teams into tiers.

TIER I: Title Contenders

Georgia: Kirby Smart’s team might not be heavily talked about, but this will change after their matchup with Alabama. Gunner Stockton is a highly underrated quarterback, well-supported by an elite defense.

Miami: Last season’s national championship runners-up have upgraded at quarterback with Darian Mensah. Injuries are a concern, but Miami is expected to perform well in the ACC and could enter the finals with a strong record.

Ohio State: Jeremiah Smith is regarded as the best player in college football. Despite setbacks, Ohio State remains a national championship favorite and is considered part of the sport’s top echelon.

Notre Dame: The Fighting Irish have standout players like CJ Carr and Leonard Moore. Future matchups will help gauge their strength, but current performance suggests they are a top contender.

Texas: Despite being top-ranked, Texas occasionally struggles to perform as the nation’s best. Consistent improvement could lead them to their first national title in decades.

Alabama: Keelon Russell has been impressive, and Alabama’s offense is reliable. Upcoming matches will further test both their offense and defense.

Indiana: The defending champions are scrutinized due to inconsistent performances. Traditionally, Indiana improves over the season, and Curt Cignetti’s record suggests they could peak again.

TIER II: Backs Against the Wall

SEC Teams (Florida, LSU, Ole Miss, Mississippi State): These teams are in a tight spot and face tough schedules. Their chances depend on overcoming strong opponents.

SMU: SMU’s loss to Louisville weakens their position. Upcoming games, especially against Notre Dame, are crucial for a strong Playoff resume.

TIER III: Still Need to Prove It

Big 12 Teams (Utah, BYU, Texas Tech): Currently, Utah appears strongest, but the title’s frontrunner is uncertain. These teams face significant upcoming challenges.

Oregon: After early setbacks, Oregon seems to have stabilized. Crucial games could shape their season’s outcome.

USC: Despite high expectations, USC struggles in decisive games. Success against major opponents is essential to change perceptions.

Tennessee: Although still in contention, Tennessee faces talent questions. Their performance against top teams will decide their Playoff prospects.

TIER IV: Bubble Watch

ACC Teams (Wake Forest, Pitt, Duke): One of these teams will likely face Miami for the ACC title. Their performances will shape their multi-bid conference position.

Big Ten Teams (Northwestern, UCLA, Minnesota): Unexpectedly, these teams have shown promise. Their remaining challenging schedules offer opportunities to impact the Playoff picture.

Missouri: With a significant victory against Florida, Missouri’s future rests on navigating a demanding schedule.

Oklahoma State: Oklahoma State stands out in an open Big 12 race, with potential for a strong finish despite early losses.

Group of 6 Race

The top-ranked champion from the Group of 6 secures a Playoff spot. Boise State remains the highest-ranked G6 team and faces crucial challenges that could determine their CFP inclusion.
