In Colombia’s closely contested presidential runoff, conservative outsider Abelardo de la Espriella held a slim lead over progressive candidate Iván Cepeda. Electoral authorities reported 99.9% of the vote count, showing de la Espriella with 49.7% and Cepeda with 48.7%. Official confirmation of the winner remains pending.
De la Espriella, a lawyer and business owner, unexpectedly gained support from former U.S. President Donald Trump despite lacking prior political experience. His victory may signal a pivot away from outgoing President Gustavo Petro’s agendas, particularly the contentious proposal to engage armed groups in peace talks.
In Barranquilla, de la Espriella, known as “The Tiger,” assured supporters of his commitment to govern for all Colombians, while also challenging Cepeda to prepare for opposition. Cepeda disputes the vote count, describing it as “unofficial and non-binding” and plans to contest results from over 30,000 polling stations.
Protests erupted in Cali, where Cepeda received strong support, with demonstrators damaging infrastructure and causing injuries. The electoral outcome prompted public unrest, highlighting regional disparities.
Both candidates offered contrasting proposals to address Colombia’s historical violence. De la Espriella advocated for strict crime-fighting measures similar to Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele’s policies, whereas Cepeda focused on reform strategies akin to outgoing leader Petro.
Colombia has endured persistent violence characterized by kidnappings and forced displacements. Last year, illegal groups were responsible for over 14,000 homicides. Voter Yolanda Hernández echoed concern over Petro’s unmet promises and rising costs, opting for de la Espriella despite her previous support for Petro.
According to Will Freeman from the Council on Foreign Relations, the election result highlighted Colombia’s polarized regional divisions more than a definitive shift in political direction. De la Espriella’s “iron fist” approach resonated most in central rather than peripheral regions.
