In an era where film and television often feature muted lighting and uninspired cinematography, Boots Riley emerges with vibrancy. The director, known for “Sorry to Bother You,” presents “I Love Boosters,” a film that diverges from contemporary norms. This movie captivates with vivid color that serves as an essential narrative element.
“I Love Boosters” centers on three women—played by Keke Palmer, Taylour Paige, and Naomi Ackie—who engage in shoplifting extravagant clothing around the Bay Area. Their main target becomes Metro Design stores, owned by the billionaire fashion designer Christie Smith, portrayed by Demi Moore.
The film seamlessly integrates live-action humor akin to “Looney Tunes” with biting social commentary, showcasing Riley’s skill at maintaining coherence amidst complexity. “I Love Boosters” demands multiple viewings for full comprehension due to its layered content. Scenes rapidly transition from a demon extracting women’s souls to discussions on the working class’s resistance against exploitative wealth.
Visually, the film is stunning. Sets and costumes are meticulously crafted with an abundance of color and originality continually displayed. Tune-Yards’ score complements the visual grandeur, with the “Hi-Yo” motif lingering with viewers long after the credits roll.
While the film has commendable aspects, it faces certain limitations. Demi Moore’s portrayal of Christie Smith, although adequate, lacks the exaggerated presence befitting the film’s absurd tone. A more flamboyant villain might enhance the storyline’s unique charm.
