Comedian Jeff Dye has addressed an incident involving fellow performer Laura Kightlinger after she wrote an insult on his Tesla. He described her behavior as “inappropriate for a 60-year-old.” Dye shared images online that were captured by his Tesla’s security cameras, showing Kightlinger writing the word “Douche” in the fog on his windshield.
“Performed on a show with a comic I’ve never met. Her name is Laura Kightlinger @KingKightlinger. She seemed nice enough. We didn’t talk and she left before I went up,” Dye wrote. “I’m assuming she didn’t know it was my Tesla she wrote ‘Douche’ on.” Dye expressed surprise at her actions, calling it strange behavior.
The post quickly attracted attention online, gathering over 440,000 views. Dye noted that if he had written something similar on her car, she might have spoken out about gender treatment differences in comedy.
Kightlinger, who has been a writer and comedian with credits including “Will & Grace” and Comedy Central specials, acknowledged the incident. She wrote, “I was so annoyed by his taking down of a comic who had just performed I impulsively wrote douche in the fog on his car.” She later apologized, admitting she acted impulsively and should’ve addressed Dye directly.
Dye replied, holding her accountable for what he termed “childish behavior,” and explained he was not crying out but simply addressing the issue. According to a statement from his management, he reiterated that his car was not vandalized beyond the writing and clarified his aim was accountability.
Entertainment reporter Christian Toto commented on the situation, indicating the rift reflects partisan tensions within comedy. He suggested that conservative comedians like Dye frequently encounter criticism. Toto explained that while humor can be sharp, Kightlinger’s method broke traditional norms.
Kightlinger’s representatives did not provide a statement when approached. The incident underscores the nuanced dynamics and challenges within the comedy industry.
