Concerns Rise Over Online Gaming Safety for Children

LAS VEGAS — Authorities in Livingston Parish made a significant discovery during a search warrant at a suspect’s home, finding the individual using voice-changing technology to deceive children online. According to Livingston Parish Sheriff Jason Ard, the suspect was imitating a teenage girl on the phone to prey on a real child. This alarming incident highlights how easily such technology can be misused, leaving unsuspecting children at risk.

The suspect had been using Roblox, an online gaming platform known to attract children. Authorities note that the man, a registered sex offender, was not permitted to be on such apps. Sheriff Ard compares the internet-enabled devices to the once-feared ‘white van’ in neighborhoods, emphasizing the online dangers now found in homes.

“This is not a victimless crime,” stated Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill at CrimeCon Las Vegas. “There are children who are being victimized in various terrible ways.”

A statewide initiative in Louisiana against child sex predators resulted in the suspect’s arrest, shedding light on a troubling national pattern. The state’s Attorney General, Liz Murrill, reports receiving close to 90,000 tips on online child exploitation this year alone. By May, 30,000 cases had been already processed, with numerous arrests made.

Parents are often unaware of the risks their children face online, a situation Murrill highlighted while discussing the need for vigilance. Former ‘To Catch a Predator’ host Chris Hansen also addressed the issue, emphasizing the stealthy nature of these threats when he spoke at the event.

Authorities have focused efforts on restricting known sex offenders from accessing online gaming and social media platforms, as these are places where vulnerable children might be targeted. Companies like Roblox face lawsuits claiming they facilitate environments where predators can act.

Despite these concerns, Roblox refutes claims of being unsafe. The company highlights extensive safety measures, including more than 100 new features designed to protect users. Their updates involve prohibiting video and image sharing, employing AI detection, and enforcing age checks. This proactive stance includes cooperation with law enforcement and the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.

Roblox continuously monitors chats and has age restrictions for chat features. Their approach includes turning off chats for users under nine, intending to safeguard younger users.
