Maine Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner is facing new allegations causing mixed reactions among voters before Tuesday’s primary election.
Jeff from Waterloo expressed concerns about Platner’s scandals. “It’s not a good situation,” Jeff said, preferring a candidate free of such controversies. He identified as conservative and doubted Platner’s viability for the Democrats.

Sheila from Harrison said the allegations would significantly influence her vote. She noted that Platner lacked the judgment expected from a Congressional representative. “Anyone who’s representing our country needs to be held to a higher standard,” Sheila said, pointing to Platner’s alleged absence of such standards.
Shortly before the primary, former partners accused Platner of heavy drinking, violent behavior, and discussing rape fantasies—allegations he denied. As a Marine Corps veteran, Platner also faced backlash for allegedly sending explicit messages, a Nazi-linked tattoo, and comments mocking a Purple Heart recipient.
Meanwhile, some voters appeared unaffected by these controversies. Although Platner’s views on women were questioned, Ellen from Acton remained unfazed. “When it comes to my vote, no,” Ellen remarked, sharing her trust in Platner’s wife and suggesting that recent accusations occurred during challenging times for Platner. Ellen believed he would represent Maine effectively.
Despite the turmoil, Jane from Wells maintained her support for Platner. “I still like him,” Jane stated. Jessica from Biddeford chose not to engage with the controversy, claiming media distractions overshadowed more critical issues. “We’re better together as one instead of fighting each other over things that don’t matter,” she commented.
Platner will compete against David Costello and Janet Mills in the June 9 Democratic primary. The winner will face incumbent Republican Sen. Susan Collins in November.
