During a campaign event in Harrison, Ohio, a confrontation occurred involving Amy Acton, Ohio’s former health director and Democratic candidate for governor. A Republican political activist, carrying a camera, approached Acton, questioning her avoidance of debates with her Republican opponent, Vivek Ramaswamy. Acton’s team quickly intervened to block the activist.
The incident, captured on video, has intensified criticisms from Ramaswamy’s supporters. They argue that Acton hasn’t adequately explained her refusal to debate as both candidates near the final stretch of their campaigns.
“Dr. Amy Acton, why do you refuse to debate your opponent, Vivek Ramaswamy?” the interviewer asked.
Acton’s staff responded by repeatedly stating, “No photos, no videos.” At one point, the cameraman’s equipment was jolted, leading him to ask the staff to proceed with caution. Acton did not answer the interviewer’s questions.
Earlier, Ramaswamy accepted a CNN debate invitation, but Acton’s campaign declined. A spokesperson stated that Acton prefers engaging directly with Ohioans. The campaign accused Ramaswamy of disseminating false information, including AI-generated ads misrepresenting Acton’s past.
Ramaswamy contended that Acton’s debate refusal casts doubt on her ability to lead Ohio as governor. He criticized her leadership as a health director and highlighted controversies from police reports.
Having secured the Democratic nomination, Acton will compete against Ramaswamy in the general election on November 3. Requests for further comments from Acton’s campaign remain unanswered.
