Senator Bill Cassidy, a Republican from Louisiana, attended a closed-door meeting at the Capitol in Washington on June 16, 2026. The act of serving in a public capacity is both an honor and duty, bound by the Constitution and laws. However, Congressional Republicans have been deemed unfit for the majorities they secured in 2024. The upcoming midterms present an opportunity for accountability.
The U.S. government is structured with checks and balances to avoid tyranny. But Congressional Republicans have bypassed this role, aligning primarily with President Trump. Their actions seem focused on fulfilling Trump’s demands while shielding him from oversight. A notable example is the unanimous decision by Republican members of the Senate Judiciary Committee to support Todd Blanche, Trump’s former defense lawyer, for U.S. attorney general. This choice followed Blanche’s involvement in questionable dealings, such as setting up a slush fund for Trump’s allies and arranging legal protection for Trump’s family from future tax concerns.
Despite evidence of his corrupt actions, every Republican on the committee supported Blanche, ignoring his role in obstructing investigations related to the Epstein files and mismanaging the Justice Department, which has led to misleading federal courts. This decision reflects a larger trend in which Congressional Republicans neglect their responsibilities to the American people.
The 119th Congress’s most significant action was passing the “One Big Beautiful Bill,” a misleading title for legislation benefiting the wealthy with tax cuts. It simultaneously reduced funds for food assistance, affecting over 4.5 million people, including 1.5 million children. Trump’s boast about a friend using this tax policy to buy a private plane they didn’t need further highlights the legislation’s skewed benefits.
The bill also removed a tax credit that helped working families afford health insurance, causing many to lose their coverage. Overall, these policies, combined with Trump’s tariff decisions, could worsen the financial situation for 70 percent of low-income households while enriching the top 1 percent.
Such governance plays a role in Trump’s declining popularity and the shift in voter sentiment, as indicated by polls showing rising Democratic support. Progressive candidates’ success is tied to their transparency about Trump’s administration. Fearful of accountability, Trump and his allies seem intent on disrupting elections to reduce voter turnout.
To counter this, mobilizing voters and safeguarding elections are crucial. The Supreme Court’s current stance may have emboldened Trump, but it is essential for citizens to ensure accountability for both Trump and his Congressional supporters, guiding the nation towards better governance.
