Council Member’s Critique of the Mayor
Ariola made these comments during a conference at City Hall and reiterated them in an interview with Newsweek. She opposed Mamdani’s participation in upcoming September 11 memorial events. ‘He knew there would be a press conference with the 9/11 families,’ Ariola said. She claimed the document release was timed to draw media focus toward the papers and away from the families actively advocating outside City Hall.
Several Republican figures, including former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani, expressed similar sentiments. Ex-Governor George Pataki commented on Mamdani’s associations with individuals like Hasan Piker, who had controversial views on the events of September 11. Release of 9/11 Documentation
On Tuesday, NYC officials launched an online portal with around 170,000 pages of 9/11-related documents, including air quality reports. This move aimed to improve transparency about the aftermath. Corporation Counsel Steven Banks emphasized the importance of granting public access to these records, which were previously unavailable.
The administration plans to release more documents gradually, with additional funding outlined in the fiscal year 2027 budget. Mamdani stated that New Yorkers have long sought access to these vital records, and releasing them honors those affected by the attacks.
The portal’s unveiling featured comedian Jon Stewart, a known advocate for 9/11 responders. He criticized past officials for downplaying air quality concerns soon after the attacks. Representative Jerry Nadler also supported sharing these files, highlighting the ignored warnings about the health impacts faced by responders.
