A spokesperson for the Portland Thorns stated that eight fans were ejected from Providence Park during the September 6 match against the Washington Spirit. The reason given was that these individuals were distributing unapproved materials, which contradicts the Fan Experience Guidelines.
The Thorns spokesperson emphasized that their goal is to maintain a safe and respectful environment for all attendees. An investigation is ongoing.
“We did not distribute any materials. We followed their own code of conduct to the letter,” said fan Amy Sousa, denying the allegations.
According to Sousa, she and others were targeted due to their support for women’s sports and their political beliefs. She insists the ejection was politically motivated, stemming from the group’s apparel and slogans such as “Save Women’s Sports”.
Video captured the moment Sousa was questioned by security and eventually escorted out alongside her group. They received a notice citing a Code of Conduct violation, which warned of further repercussions, including potential bans.
Sousa mentioned that they only brought copies of the NWSL and Providence Park codes of conduct in response to a warning from activist Hannah Perry. She claims they were not distributing these copies outside the group.
Post-ejection, the group went to The Sports Bra, a bar supporting women’s sports in Portland. However, the situation escalated, resulting in their removal due to their allegedly transphobic attire.
The Sports Bra released a statement affirming their mission to support girls and women in sports. They clarified that they don’t tolerate exclusionary messages.
This incident highlights ongoing tension around the support and inclusion of trans women in sports, reflecting broader cultural issues.
