Cornell University has implemented a new rule forbidding the processing of wild game in school kitchens. This decision comes months after a viral incident where two students butchered a bear in a dormitory kitchen.
New Policy Rules
The university’s policy states, “Processing wild/game animals in community kitchens is strictly prohibited.” This rule was introduced following a 2025 incident involving two students who brought a black bear carcass to Cornell’s Ganędagǫ Hall for preparation.
The Incident
Aaron Chin, one of the students involved, publicly identified himself as one of the butchers on a podcast a few months after the event. Chin explained that he and his fellow student had intended to take the bear to a friend’s house near the kill site, two hours from the school. An unforeseen emergency made the friend’s home unavailable, prompting them to use the campus kitchen instead.
Chin emphasized that they meticulously reviewed campus rules before bringing the bear meat on campus. He stated, “We were really diligent in reading all of the rules and regulations. We made sure we did everything by the book because we knew we were going to be under scrutiny.”
Social Media Backlash
The incident sparked backlash on social media and within the campus, leading to an investigation by state regulators. The New York Department of Environmental Conservation inspected the kitchen used by the students. The inspection found no violations of any environmental codes.
This prompt action by the university underscores its commitment to maintaining a safe and respectful community space.
