The ongoing conflict in Ukraine, instigated by Russia, has reached its fifth winter. The National Academy of Sciences building in Kyiv was engulfed in flames after a recent drone strike carried out by Russian forces.
Western allies supporting Ukraine face mounting challenges in containing the violence. It is vital for them to recognize that negotiations for de-escalation with Russia are feasible only when approached from a position of strength. Russia actively seeks out any signs of weakness within opposing forces.
Currently, the Kremlin has detected a genuine hesitation from the West, which could undermine efforts to curb Russian aggression. For Ukraine’s defenders and their allies, applying counterpressure, rather than making concessions, is crucial in reducing Russian hostility towards Ukraine and NATO.
