Political Basis for Federal Grant Cancellations
Recent court documents reveal that federal green grants were canceled based solely on political considerations, according to the Trump administration. Department of Energy (DOE) attorney Jeff Novak stated that the DOE identified 624 grants for potential termination.
Novak explained that the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) selected 284 of these grants for cancellation. All but one of these grants were tied to states that supported Kamala Harris in 2024 and had two Democratic-caucusing senators. While these selected grants faced cancellation, the remaining 340 did not undergo the same fate.
“DOE accepts that the inclusion of grants in the October notice tranche was based solely on the political identity of the grant recipient’s state,” Novak wrote, clarifying that no programmatic, legal, financial, or performance factors influenced the decision.
For the original list of 624 proposed cancellations by the DOE, Novak confirmed that political affiliation was not a factor.
