Crane Leads Deerfield’s Resurgence

As Cooper Crane embarked on his sophomore season with the Deerfield Warriors, he faced several challenges. Top among these was adjusting to the varsity team and securing his spot as starting quarterback. At 5-foot-10 and 170 pounds, Crane accomplished these tasks and held the position for three years, determined to move past a disappointing 2025 season.

“My goal has always been to turn this into a bounce-back season,” Crane explained. “We owe the seniors after all their hard work. They deserve success.”

Crane’s effective leadership and junior running back Mycol Cochran’s efforts have returned Deerfield to playoff contention. This season, the 14th-seeded Warriors, ending the regular season at 5-4, face 19th-seeded Grayslake Central in the Class 5A playoffs.

Crane highlighted their vital season-opening victory over Lake Forest, a team that previously dominated them. “Winning that game set the tone. I scored my first varsity touchdown, a big moment that boosted our confidence,” he said.

Since then, he has demonstrated skill in both passing and the triple-option rushing attack, making split-second decisions and reading defenses effectively. He introduced this system while on the freshman-sophomore team, and its success at the varsity level is a testament to his abilities.

“Cooper is incredibly smart about football,” said Deerfield coach Brandon Geuder. “His insights and leadership have been crucial for us.”

Despite not initially considering team leadership, Crane embraced the quarterback’s inherent responsibilities. “I try to be the best leader I can,” he expressed. Weekly Zoom calls with the offensive line, initiated by Crane and senior center Jaxon Rubin, have strengthened team strategies and camaraderie.

Crane has completed 47 of 85 passes for 623 yards and six touchdowns, while also rushing for 231 yards and four touchdowns. The Warriors averaged 32 points in their last four wins, thanks also to Crane’s resilience. “He’s physically tough and inspires the team,” said senior linebacker Stone Bielawa.

Crane’s approach embodies the Warriors’ spirit. “Contact is what I love about football. I enjoy both receiving and delivering hits,” he noted.

His leadership and tenacity have placed the Warriors in a position for success. “We aren’t the largest team, but our determination is unparalleled,” Crane concluded.
