Democrats and media commentators face significant criticism for their controversial response to Tulsi Gabbard’s resignation as Director of National Intelligence. Her decision to step down follows her husband, Abraham’s, diagnosis with a rare form of bone cancer.
Speaking on ‘Fox & Friends Weekend,’ Tony Kinnett, national correspondent for The Daily Signal, highlighted the immediate political reaction. He pointed out the behavior of social media pundits and analysts, noting their tendency to chase provocative statements as news breaks. Kinnett remarked that these attacks exposed the questionable character of many commentators involved.
The social media ecosystem, a lot of the analysis and punditry sphere, is all about getting out and saying the spiciest thing as soon as the news breaks,” Kinnett said.
Gabbard’s resignation is scheduled for June 30. In her letter, obtained by Fox News Digital, Gabbard expressed gratitude for her role but emphasized her husband’s health situation as the reason for her departure.
Instead of focusing on this personal matter, some media figures and Democrats criticized Gabbard’s work. During a discussion on CNN, former Deputy DNI Beth Sanner extended her condolences but also made a derogatory remark about Gabbard’s tenure.
Senator Adam Schiff of California voiced similar sentiments on social media. He acknowledged the circumstances warrant sympathy but stated Gabbard’s resignation was her sole positive contribution to national security.
Kinnett argued that such reactions to a personal issue point to a concerning trend in political discussions. He emphasized the importance of prioritizing family and personal obligations in such critical situations.
The most principled thing you can do as a wife is to leave something behind, as a spouse in general is to leave your career behind,” Kinnett said.
Gabbard’s decision reflects her commitment as a spouse, despite negative responses from critics.
Tulsi Gabbard, who began her role in February 2025, is a U.S. Army Reserve officer and combat veteran. She previously served in Congress for multiple terms, initially as a Democrat, before transitioning to an independent and later joining the Republican Party.

In her resignation letter, Gabbard expressed gratitude for her husband’s unwavering support throughout their marriage and during her overseas deployments. She asserted her inability to let him face his health battle alone while fulfilling her demanding duties.
The former President, Donald Trump, reacted on Truth Social, supporting Gabbard’s decision. He praised her contributions and expressed optimism regarding her husband’s recovery.
Tulsi has done an incredible job, and we will miss her,” Trump wrote.
