Cuba Expresses Willingness to Negotiate with the U.S.

Cuba has signaled a readiness to modify its economic and governmental structures, showing eagerness to engage in continued dialogue with the United States, according to Cuba’s ambassador to the United Nations. However, he expressed concerns about the sincerity of Washington’s participation in these talks.

In a statement to The New York Times, Ernesto Soberón Guzmán, Cuba’s ambassador, emphasized the nation’s openness to discuss any topic with the U.S., highlighting the importance of reciprocity and equality in these discussions.

He pointed out, however, that aggressive comments from U.S. leadership, such as indications of readiness to control Cuba, have been detrimental to fostering a climate of trust and dialogue. “Warmongering rhetoric does not help,” Soberón Guzmán remarked, stressing that such statements are viewed as pretexts for possible military intervention.

This conversation marks the first time in several years a Cuban government official has openly granted an interview to The Times. Soberón Guzmán mentioned that the Cuban administration aimed to communicate directly with the American public, advocating for peace and collaboration despite the ongoing pressures from the Trump administration.
