Cuban Officials Rally Around Raúl Castro Following U.S. Indictment

Cuban authorities have shown strong support for Raúl Castro, their former president, following his indictment on murder charges. These charges stem from the downing of two civilian planes 30 years ago.

The indictment was announced a day prior in Miami, where Mr. Castro faces charges for his alleged involvement in the 1996 incident. Despite these allegations, state-run media and officials in Cuba have taken to social platforms to promote an image of national unity around Mr. Castro.

Images of Castro as a youthful soldier, engaging with children, and interacting warmly with his brother Fidel Castro have spread across social media. Posts accompanying these images highlighted his honor and integrity. Cuba’s current president, Miguel Díaz-Canel, referred to Mr. Castro as a paternal figure in a video shared on X.

Now nearing 95 years old, Mr. Castro is indicted on four murder counts related to the shooting down of aircraft that were in international airspace close to Cuba’s northern coast. His indictment marks a significant challenge in his later years, following his long tenure as defense minister spanning nearly half a century.

Even without official titles, Castro holds considerable influence in Cuba. The charges appear to be a strategic move by the United States, potentially intending to pressure Cuba’s leadership. However, according to experts, the charges could instead galvanize the Cuban government to resist U.S. pressure, using the incident to strengthen internal unity.

In Havana, residents watched closely as news of the U.S. indictment of Mr. Castro broke, reflecting the ongoing tension between the two countries.
