Trump’s Focus Raises Concerns for G.O.P. in Midterms

President Donald Trump appears to be concentrating on matters unrelated to preserving Republican control in Congress as midterm elections approach. Less than six months from the elections, actions suggest a shift in focus.

Trump backed a MAGA contender against Texas’s senior Republican senator, ignoring the risk to the seat’s security. He’s highlighted daily his elaborate new White House ballroom, minimizing the soaring gas prices as trivial compared to his focus on Iran.

Despite ongoing talks to halt the Iran conflict he started, Trump emphasizes his international achievements over domestic issues, labeling them Democratic “hoaxes.”

A controversial move surfaced last week with Trump’s creation of a $1.8 billion fund. This fund supports individuals claiming victimization by “weaponization and lawfare,” including participants in the January 6 Capitol events.

This decision left Senate Republicans frustrated, recalling their experiences from that day. Many returned home unhappy, finding a president prioritizing personal agendas over November midterm election goals. Consequently, they abandoned Washington without agreeing on Trump’s sought immigration funding or his $1 billion ballroom project.

Despite realizing the party’s future largely depends on Trump, party members admit there’s little they can do to influence him to aid their cause.

Republican pollster Whit Ayres commented, “The president’s role was to energize the economy, curb inflation, halt illegal immigration, and distance from woke ideologies. His actions show his focus isn’t on maintaining Congress control.”
