Aaron Civale secured his first save of the year Thursday with a clean 10th inning, making him the 13th Cubs pitcher to achieve this feat in the current season.
The pitching staff has endured difficult scenarios due to injuries. As the Cubs (62-47) aim to catch the Milwaukee Brewers (67-41), who lead the National League Central by 5½ games, the approaching trade deadline offers a chance to address roster gaps.
Jed Hoyer, the president of baseball operations, and the front office are evaluating how to approach this opportunity. The Cubs secure a strong position in the top NL wild-card spot, entering the weekend five games ahead of the last playoff position.
“It’s all risk,” Manager Craig Counsell noted Thursday. “There’s risk for the organization in terms of the future and the present. It’s Hoyer’s job to assess that daily.”
For a major improvement, the team might trade top prospects or young players to acquire Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal, a soon-to-be free agent. Hoyer’s experience is crucial at these pivotal moments.

Thornton, for instance, experienced a drop in strikeout rates, affecting recent games. He entered a Wednesday game with a 2.51 ERA but allowed a walk-off loss. Acquiring a high-leverage reliever may be costly, but it’s necessary as closer Daniel Palencia remains out with a flexor strain.
“It’s our journey this year with our bullpen,” Counsell said, reflecting on injury impacts.
He credits Jacob Webb for consistently delivering crucial outs in recent months. This adaptability highlights the bullpen’s resilience amid challenges.
