Cubs Face Crucial Pitching Choices in Wild-Card Race

The Chicago Cubs are facing critical decisions as they navigate the National League wild-card standings. Despite having a chance to secure a playoff spot against the Miami Marlins on Tuesday night, they fell short, with an 8-2 loss in 12 innings. The loss resulted from missed opportunities and unfortunate plays.

Matt Shaw’s inability to execute a bunt play in the 10th inning exemplified the challenges. Facing the Marlins’ reliever Jack Ralston, Shaw popped out instead of advancing runners, leading to a tied game. Ian Happ, following Shaw, hit a deep fly that could have secured a win if the bunt had succeeded. The innings ended without the Cubs taking the lead, and the game unraveled in the 12th inning, with the Marlins scoring six runs.

The Cubs went 1-for-18 with runners in scoring positions and left 15 runners stranded. These missed opportunities, combined with the outcomes of other games, have intensified pressure. With the Philadelphia Phillies defeating the Milwaukee Brewers and the San Diego Padres falling to the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Cubs are tied in the wild-card race with only five games remaining.

Nico Hoerner’s effort in fielding a single by Marlins’ Otto Lopez during the 11th inning at Wrigley Field underscored the intensity. In the broader scheme, aligning the team’s starting pitchers for the postseason remains a top priority for the Cubs.

Shota Imanaga delivered a commendable performance, limiting the Marlins to one run over five innings. Imanaga has shown improvement with a 1.96 ERA in September, despite a high pitch count. He credits his experience over the past three years for his progress and is confident in his health and performance.

Manager Craig Counsell is planning the rotation, with Kevin Gausman scheduled to pitch on Wednesday. Yet, uncertainties remain for Thursday’s game. The Cubs face challenges in setting rotations for the final series against the Red Sox, with weather forecasts predicting heavy rain in Boston. The impending Nor’easter adds unpredictability to the weekend series.

“There’s a weather consideration this weekend,” Counsell noted. “Decisions will be better made as we approach the weekend, but right now, the focus is the next games.”

Additionally, potential wild-card matchups could influence the Cubs’ tactics. If facing the Phillies, a lefty-heavy rotation might be advantageous against Philadelphia’s formidable left-handed hitters.

The Cubs’ performance, marked by a 7-8 record in recent weeks, leaves them needing to resolve numerous issues. One consideration is the potential return of Justin Steele, absent from the majors since April 2025. Expected to throw in the bullpen, Steele’s inclusion would necessitate roster changes, but Counsell remains optimistic about Steele’s recent performance.

“He had a successful rehab outing,” Counsell remarked. “That’s a positive for him and the team. Beyond Justin, other team considerations remain crucial as we aim to make the right decisions.”
