Strong Starting Rotation Influences Success
Injuries have challenged the Cubs’ pitching depth this season, but the rotation has been a critical factor in their success. Matthew Boyd’s performance on Sunday exemplified this, as he allowed only two runs through seven innings.
“Any time you do that, it means you’re having some quick innings or you’re getting everybody out,” manager Craig Counsell commented on Boyd’s performance.
Boyd’s recent outings have been impressive. Since returning from the injured list in July, he maintains a 2.35 ERA. The Cubs’ overall rotation posted a 2.90 ERA through the challenging schedule, facing tough teams like the Yankees and Dodgers both home and away.
With right-handers Kevin Gausman and Clay Holmes integrating into the team, the Cubs’ rotation could become even more formidable.
Ian Happ Ends Slump
Ian Happ was in a significant slump, going 0-for-22 before turning things around in the series against the Royals. Over the last two games, he hit two home runs and managed five hits, boosting his confidence and performance.
“Hopefully we’re getting the good Ian back,” Counsell said about Happ’s recent resurgence.
The Cubs need Happ to maintain this form as they move deeper into the season.
Miguel Amaya Seizes Limited Opportunities
Amaya, often playing behind Carson Kelly, had limited chances this season. Nevertheless, he has made the most of them. In Sunday’s game, he collected two hits, including a pivotal three-run homer in the seventh inning.
“I was happy for Miggy,” Counsell praised Amaya’s performance.
Amaya ranks seventh on the team with a 107 wRC+ with limited at-bats, showing his skill and perseverance.
As the Cubs prepare for their next series, the contributions from their rotation, Happ’s improvement, and Amaya’s resilience will be crucial in their pursuit of postseason success.
