The Chicago Cubs, currently leading the National League wild-card race, have made significant roster changes. Led by president Jed Hoyer, the Cubs focused heavily on bolstering their pitching, making four trades in the days leading up to the MLB trade deadline. This reflects their belief in the team’s ability to succeed in the postseason.
Hoyer stated the team’s resilience warranted deliberate investment. The Cubs acquired right-handers Clay Holmes from the New York Mets and Kevin Gausman from the Toronto Blue Jays, along with reliever Ryan Zeferjahn from the Los Angeles Angels and left-hander Braxton Garrett from the Miami Marlins. Outfielder Tyrone Taylor, also from the Mets, joined the roster. Zeferjahn and Garrett will remain under team control beyond the current season.
These acquisitions came at a cost. The Cubs parted with former top prospect Moisés Ballesteros, shortstop Jefferson Rojas, first baseman Jonathon Long, and several other prospects. According to Hoyer, while trading prospects isn’t ideal, improving the roster to pursue wins is a priority.
“We’re here to win,” Hoyer said. “We’re here to make this roster better.”
The team had hoped to land a big-league controllable starting pitcher but found prices prohibitive. Although conversations occurred with the Detroit Tigers for left-hander Tarik Skubal, no deal materialized, and he went to the Los Angeles Dodgers instead.
Adding Holmes and Gausman enhances the pitching staff, compensating for injuries within the rotation. Though there’s uncertainty about when Gausman and Holmes will enter the rotation, Braxton Garrett provides depth options. Manager Craig Counsell mentioned the possibility of occasionally using a six-man rotation but noted the potential strain on the bullpen.
Despite a fibula fracture, Holmes has shown progress and may soon join the Cubs’ roster. Discussions will determine if he needs another rehab outing.
The Cubs’ deadline efforts could amplify their postseason impact, especially if they surpass the division-leading Milwaukee Brewers to secure a bye in the National League Division Series. The teams will face each other seven more times.
Hoyer emphasized the importance of performing well to close the gap with their rivals.
“The pressure is on us,” Hoyer said.
