Cullen Winters’ Ambitious Pursuit at Mount Carmel
Cullen Winters is on a mission to claim championships in both football and baseball during his junior year at Mount Carmel. As a crucial defensive player, Winters contributed to the football team’s Class 8A title victory in the fall. Now, he aims to replicate that success on the baseball field. “Winning in two sports in one year would be pretty cool,” Winters said. “My football experience helps me. Hopefully, we can achieve the same in baseball.”
Mount Carmel’s Baseball Victory
On Monday night, Winters played a pivotal role as Mount Carmel secured a spot in the state semifinals. His go-ahead RBI single in the eighth inning led the team to a 6-3 victory over Sandburg in the Class 4A Crestwood Supersectional at Ozinga Field. Logan Fernandez contributed with a two-run double, and Brady Holland added a double and an RBI. Jonathan Osornio provided a pinch-hit RBI single in the eighth. Winters also scored a run, demonstrating his versatility and impact on the field.
Pitching Performance and Game Highlights
Jake Matise, a Lewis recruit, skillfully navigated a bases-loaded situation in the seventh inning to force extra innings. He eventually secured the win for Mount Carmel, leading them to the state semifinal. “I just needed to get my team out of that to keep us in the game,” Matise explained. “I had to get us out of that jam, any way possible.” The team’s resilience and strategic play were evident throughout the game.
Opposing Team’s Efforts
Sandburg’s Giovanni Longo hit a two-run homer, and the team tied the game 3-3 in the seventh inning. However, Matise ensured no further progress for Sandburg with a critical flyout that halted their momentum. Winters then delivered a crucial single to break the tie. “I knew I had to put the ball in play,” Winters stated. “I just found a hole. It was a significant moment.”
Winters’ Consistent Performance
Throughout the playoffs, Winters exhibited consistent excellence. He went 5-for-9 with three RBIs in two games at the Brother Rice Sectional. His contributions extended beyond offense. “He made that catch on the 3-2 count in the seventh inning. He’s making catches in the rain in the eighth,” Matise noted. “He’s been spectacular this postseason.”
Coach’s Perspective
Coach Brian Hurry recognized Winters’ competitive spirit early on. “Cullen is a fierce competitor,” Hurry remarked. “I’m glad he plays baseball because of his confident and poised mentality.” Winters’ enthusiasm and dedication make him a valuable asset to the team.
Looking Ahead
As Mount Carmel looks toward the state semifinals, Winters remains focused. “I did some extra hitting the Sunday before the St. Laurence game,” Winters revealed. “That started the hot streak. Now, I’ve just got to keep it going.” With two more games ahead, Winters and his team aim for the state championship.
