Lake Forest senior midfielder Madelyn Cummins has extensive experience in high-stakes playoff matches. As a four-year starter, she contributed to the Scouts reaching a Class 2A supersectional when she was a freshman. On Friday, during the second half of a tense 2A Lake Zurich Sectional championship game, Cummins received a penalty kick chance. She faced this crucial moment with readiness.
“We’ve practiced penalty kicks a lot, so I felt prepared,” Cummins stated. She mentioned the pressure from last year’s loss in regionals due to penalty kicks. “Stepping up there is uncomfortable, but it’s necessary to win the game.” In the 55th minute, Cummins successfully converted the penalty kick, leading the third-seeded Scouts to a 1-0 win against fifth-seeded Lake Zurich.
Lake Forest, with a 15-7 record, had also narrowly defeated Lake Zurich (16-6-1) in a North Suburban Conference match. Their next challenge is against Crystal Lake Central (19-2) in the Lake Zurich Supersectional at 6 p.m. on Monday. This match-up is significant as the Scouts were previously defeated by Crystal Lake Central in the 2023 supersectional.
“My freshman year, we lost a tough game. We aim to move beyond that,” remarked Cummins. “Advancing is such an honor. I was thrilled with many thoughts after the game. Everyone gave their all. We worked hard.”
Cummins scored her team-high 14th goal of the season, with Lake Zurich’s senior goalkeeper Kelly Nelson reaching for the shot to the upper-left corner but failing to stop it. Shortly after, Cummins took a hit to the nose from the ball and exited the game.
“I was exhausted,” she admitted. “But I was ready for that PK. I wanted it.” Coach Ty Stuckslager confirmed that he also wanted Cummins to take the shot. “Maddy is a competitor,” he said. “Her speed is deceptive, and she has a great first touch, understanding what’s needed. She excelled in these scenarios and showed remarkable composure towards the game’s end.”
