Chicago White Sox player Munetaka Murakami left the game against the Detroit Tigers on Friday due to tightness in his right hamstring. He exited in the third inning after an assessment by the team’s medical staff. Murakami experienced the injury while running to first base during a fielder’s choice play at Rate Field. With a runner on first and one out, Murakami hit a ground ball to second baseman Zach McKinstry. The Tigers managed a force out at second, but Murakami outpaced the throw to first, preventing a double play.
The Sox are conducting further evaluations on Murakami’s condition. Before his early departure, Murakami shared the American League lead with Houston Astros’ Yordan Alvarez, both having hit 20 home runs. He was also tied for the top spot in RBIs with 41, alongside Tampa Bay Rays’ Jonathan Aranda.
Murakami joined the White Sox this offseason with a two-year contract after spending eight years with the Tokyo Yakult Swallows. He has made history as the only rookie in Major League Baseball to achieve 20 home runs before June.
