D.C. Lawmakers Caught Off Guard by Proposed Tax Initiative Bill

The proposal came from Rep. James Comer, a Republican from Kentucky, approximately three months before the upcoming midterm elections. These elections hold significance as they will decide if Republicans maintain their control of the House, and if Comer continues as the chair of the Oversight Committee.

Previously, D.C. officials viewed Comer as a cooperative Republican partner. This perception was strengthened by Comer’s strong support for the Washington Commanders’ potential return to a renovated RFK Stadium.
