Dakota Johnson Reflects on Career and Future Aspirations

Actress Dakota Johnson shared insights into her personal and professional life in a recent interview with Vogue. At 36, she admits her life has taken unexpected turns. Expressing a desire to start a family, Johnson mentioned, “I really do. I do, but for whatever reason, that’s the plan of the universe,” she said. “So I would love that. I hope that that happens for me. I’ve always felt, especially the last few years, that there is a soul that wants to come through. And I hope that I’m lucky enough to be able to do that.”

Being around friends and colleagues who are starting families can be tough for Johnson. She is hopeful and shares, “things turned out differently than I thought,” but she remains optimistic about the future.

Johnson’s film career began in the 2010s with roles in “The Social Network” and “21 Jump Street.” Her major breakthrough came with playing Anastasia Steele in “Fifty Shades of Grey.” Subsequent roles in “Peanut Butter Falcon,” “Madame Web,” and “The Materialists” have continued to solidify her place in Hollywood. However, Johnson now feels the need to slow her career pace. “I’ve worked back-to-back for so long that now I have this deep calling to shift my perspective a bit and maybe have a bit more of a real life,” she shares. “I’ve been gone for, like, 20 years. The people in my life are so used to me leaving for months at a time.”

Her focus is on living life authentically, embracing new opportunities. “I want to unfold and unfold and really lovingly embrace this life,” she said.

She is preparing for the release of her new film “Verity,” a psychological thriller based on Colleen Hoover’s novel. The film stars Josh Hartnett and Anne Hathaway alongside Johnson, who plays Lowen Ashleigh, a ghostwriter uncovering unsettling secrets. Discussing the project, Johnson commented on the direction from Michael Showalter. “Michael Showalter, the director, would give me direction that was so extremely camp, and that’s not really me as an artist,” she explained. “But it was so fun, and our references and guidelines were all these erotic thrillers that people are like, Okay, this is ridiculous, but I’m enjoying myself.”

Johnson comes from a family of acting notables. Her mother, Melanie Griffith, is an Academy Award-nominated actress. Her father, Don Johnson, is known for “Miami Vice,” and her grandmother is actress Tippi Hedren. This Hollywood heritage has undoubtedly shaped her perspective on the industry.
