David Crowley has emerged victorious in the Wisconsin Democratic primary for governor, defeating Francesca Hong. This unexpected win positions him against GOP Rep. Tom Tiffany in the November election.
Crowley’s campaign faced challenges, including a temporary suspension in July. However, his candidacy was bolstered by the endorsement of two-term Democratic Gov. Tony Evers. In contrast, Hong’s standing suffered due to past controversial social media posts.
Crowley’s triumph breaks the pattern of recent progressive victories in primaries across Michigan, New York, and Colorado. His win comes at a pivotal time, with the Wisconsin governor’s office considered a major political prize following Evers’ decision not to run for reelection. Wisconsin, a battleground state, saw President Trump win by a slim margin in 2024. The state uniquely has one Senate representative from each major party.
The race evolved when Crowley initially withdrew his candidacy and endorsed establishment candidate Lt. Gov. Sara Rodriguez. However, Rodriguez withdrew after financial miscalculations. This left the field to Crowley, state lawmaker Francesca Hong, and former Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes. Barnes, a progressive figure, dropped out of the race amid allegations regarding his conduct, although no crimes were alleged.
The primary spotlight shifted to Crowley and Hong. Hong’s previous inflammatory social media remarks became a focal point. Her posts included critiques of the police and ICE, and cultural comments on Wisconsin’s Culver’s chain. She later adjusted her stance on several issues.
