Daymond John’s Advice on Business Success

Daymond John, known for his role on “Shark Tank,” shares straightforward advice for achieving success in business. He highlights the importance of passion, emphasizing that your business should be centered on something you enjoy.

Building a Business Around Passion

Speaking at Fanatics Fest, the 57-year-old entrepreneur explained the necessity of loving your work. He advises starting a business in a field you would pursue for free. This genuine interest ensures sustained commitment beyond monetary motivation.

“Any business is a great business if you really love it,” John remarked. He illustrates that even individuals like Kevin O’Leary, seemingly driven by profit, are motivated by their enjoyment of the intricate processes involved.

Early Entrepreneurial Journey

John’s journey began early. Fueled by a keen entrepreneurial spirit, he co-founded FUBU in 1992 with three friends. FUBU, standing for “For Us, By Us,” emerged from John’s frustration with fashion brands ignoring African Americans. His love for fashion and music fueled this endeavor.

The brand started with John producing wool hats and T-shirts at his mother’s home in Queens, New York. He was motivated by a desire to serve and respect his community, especially within the vibrant hip-hop culture.

Achieving Global Recognition

FUBU matured into a worldwide fashion brand. John’s authenticity and respect for his community contributed to this growth. His business was not merely about selling clothes. It was about community connection and cultural respect.

Shark Tank Ventures

In 2009, John joined the cast of “Shark Tank,” investing in emerging businesses. He prioritizes the individual over the idea, valuing entrepreneurs capable of learning and progressing. Notable investments include Bombas and Bubba’s-Q Boneless Ribs.

John articulates his investment approach: “I always look for the person first — before the idea.” He seeks partners who are open to learning and are driven to succeed.

Fan Engagement at Fanatics Fest

At Fanatics Fest, a dynamic sports festival, John relished the opportunity to be a fan himself. Despite being immersed in a wealth of activities, he appreciated the expansive celebration of sporting culture.

This festival encompasses everything from WWE to UFC, offering signings, trading opportunities, and interactions with sports celebrities. John expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I’m just here being a fan myself.”
