The discussion over who holds the title of NBA’s greatest of all time (GOAT) sees new perspectives as co-hosts of ‘The Big Weekend Show’ debate former President Donald Trump’s choice of Michael Jordan over LeBron James. Each host shares their views on this enduring conversation.
NBC’s recent resumption of NBA broadcasts has rekindled memories for seasoned fans. After securing an 11-year media contract, NBC has brought back its signature NBA theme music, familiar to many from 1990 to 2002. Collaborating with ESPN and Amazon Prime Video, the NBA has shifted away from its long-time partner TNT. In preparation for NBC’s 2025-26 NBA coverage, the channel unveiled Michael Jordan, famed former Chicago Bulls player, as a “special contributor.” Despite speculation, Jordan’s involvement consisted merely of an interview with lead play-by-play announcer Mike Tirico. This interview was segmented and spread over the season.
Some thought Jordan might appear regularly on the broadcast desk, yet his role was limited to a single filmed discussion with Tirico
, which NBC divided into several segments aired throughout the year.
Mike Tirico, observed before an NFL face-off between the Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints on October 5, 2026, commented on the ongoing curiosity about Jordan’s interview, saying, I love the fact that we did one interview. A year later and people are still talking about it.
In the interview, Jordan sidestepped engaging in everyday NBA discussions. Instead, he touched on broader matters like load management and his everlasting passion for basketball. Many viewers hoped for insights on current players like LeBron James or debates surrounding issues like Kawhi Leonard’s situation with the Clippers. However, Tirico emphasized the segments presented an authentic side of Jordan.
He commented, Michael Jordan hadn’t been on TV for a long time for a reason. He enjoys being Michael Jordan.
Jordan, who played for the Chicago Bulls from 1981 to 1998, stayed aloof from debates about top players or trending stories.
Though there may be opportunities for another interview, Tirico expresses eagerness to converse about any future topics with Jordan, if he agrees. He stated, It was damn cool to hang with MJ and talk basketball, and talk business and golf and all that other stuff.
As the NBA gears up for the 2026-27 season commencement on October 20, fans are set for an exciting opening day featuring the Boston Celtics against the Detroit Pistons, the New York Knicks defending their title against the revamped Philadelphia 76ers, and the Western Conference champion San Antonio Spurs against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
