Unfortunately, the 49ers face challenges beyond Samuel’s return. Wide receiver Ricky Pearsall is set for surgery to repair his posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) in his right knee, expected to end his season. Pearsall has faced a series of injuries, including past knee and shoulder issues, restricting his on-field time since joining the NFL.
Pearsall showed promise in his rookie year, catching 31 passes for 400 yards and three touchdowns, though he struggled with injuries. In 2025, Pearsall seemed to emerge as the team’s primary receiver, managing 327 yards in four games before his knee injury interrupted his progress.
Amid Pearsall’s setbacks, Deebo Samuel’s return is timely. Samuel, having initially spent six seasons with the 49ers, was traded to Washington in 2025. He made 72 receptions for 727 yards and five touchdowns with the Commanders last season before rejoining San Francisco as a free agent.
With Samuel back, paired with free-agent acquisition Mike Evans and second-round pick De’Zhaun Stribling, the 49ers are poised to reconfigure their receiving lineup. Samuel’s career statistics are impressive, boasting 406 catches for 5,519 yards and 27 touchdowns, along with rushing for 1,218 yards and 21 touchdowns.
Despite Pearsall’s absence, the 49ers hope Samuel’s playmaking abilities will inject energy and effectiveness into their offense. His average of 8.7 yards after the catch places him at the forefront of NFL receivers since 2019, underscoring his impact.
